How is this movie effect done?

I was watching Angel's and Demons last night, and I saw the part where Ewan Mcgregor's character sets himself on fire and dies. How is this effect done without the person dying in real life? I want to know because for my video production cl, i'll be doing movie effects, and talent effects as well.
